THE GAY BLOOD
COLLECTION
In 1985, the FDA established a lifetime blood donation ban on sexually active gay men. Together with pigment artist, Stuart Semple, we created inks and paints from the blood of gay Mother employees, using them as protest tools. Artists and activists around the world joined in, using these materials to create art and take action in a fight to reverse this outdated policy.
Then we even ran around Soho during Fashion Week, putting up posters in an effort to protest many of the New York's biggest fashion designers inability to donate blood. Overall, the collection sold out and raised nearly $60,000 – with all proceeds going to Callen-Lorde. And in May 2023 the ban was officially lifted.
