After a lengthy Manhattan residency, Mother New York relocated offices in 2021 to Gowanus, smack dab between the infamous polluted canal & a Lowe's parking lot. An area rich with creative history, Gowanus has long been home to artists and makers alike. But to avoid being another Brooklyn transplant, the agency had to come up with a thoughtful way to ring their neighbors' doorbells.
So Mother started a tab at ten local small businesses, ranging from boutique flower shop to tattoo parlor. Agency employees could flash their Mother Special cards and get a free cocktail, pizza, or bowlcut. All an initiative to be more intentional with the neighborhood we were now residing, and energize the local economy.
Then we made a short documentary about it, where I got to meet and interview all the local business owners. I met Robert of Halyards, a woodworker who hand-made all the furniture in his bar. Fonda of Zuzu's Petals, who rebuilt her entire flower shop from the ground up after a devastating fire in the early 90's. And many others.
